Are Socialization Onboarding Programs Worth Your Money? By Chuck Ros When you evaluate onboarding programs that focus on socialization for new hires, it's easy to lose sight of the actual objective of onboarding. All the features of an acculturation solution should be designed to integrate new employees with your existing processes. For example, onboarding should familiarize new hires with the communication interface your other employees already use. Too often, software providers create a socialization portal that is outward facing. This means instead of teaching new hires to use your organization's existing platform, it introduces them to an entirely different system first (the infamous "onboarding portal"). Then, your new hires still have to learn to use your company's regular system before they can be fully assimilated into the corporate culture. This obviously makes the third party socialization portal a DETOUR rather than a straight path to new hire productivity. It often makes more sense to use an existing platform (such as Microsoft SharePoint) to perform acculturation functions. If you do require additional onboarding software, make sure it is compatible with and based on principles similar to those of your existing intranet system.
