HR Onboarding for Multinationals
By Chuck Ros
Multinational companies face a number of challenges when it comes to handling the administration of their workforce. If an organization wants “go global” successfully, finding solutions to these issues must be a top priority for HR. Onboarding new employees is one of the areas where Human Resources needs to pay close attention to local labor laws and other regulations that impact employment relationships. For example, all contracts and policies must be fully vetted for compliance with employees’ legal rights in the country where they will be working. In many European nations, workers’ rights are protected much more substantially than they are in the U.S. Policies that are in place at the corporate headquarters may not be enforceable in satellite offices around the world. Therefore, employers must weigh the consequences of having a disparity in worker rights between branches. The goal should be to make policies both fair and legally compliant across the board for all new hires. Language is also an important consideration. Best practices dictate that all contracts, forms, policies, safety training, and other employment related communications be provided in an employee’s first language. If a virtual onboarding system is used, the electronic signature collection process must be in compliance with the relevant protocols for the host country. Finally, onboarding must be carried out in such a way that data privacy laws are not inadvertently violated. These rules impact the collection and transfer of employee information and may mean not all worker data can be transferred from the satellite location to the corporate headquarters. To overcome these obstacles, the use of an HR onboarding solution that can be fully customized to follow multinational business rules is advisable. |
