HR Onboarding for New Supervisors - Extra Training Required
By Chuck Ros of Emerald Software Group
Many states have laws in place that require state agency employers to send all new supervisors through specialized anti-harassment training. In states such as California, Connecticut, and Maine, there are similar rules that apply even to employers in the private sector. For example, in Connecticut the Fair Employment Practices Act applies to all employers with 50 or more workers. In that state, new supervisors must receive sexual harassment training within 6 months of their start date in the supervisory position. This can impact HR onboarding practices when supervisors are hired from outside a company rather than being promoted from within. In these situations, it often makes sense to schedule the necessary training in conjunction with the general orientation provided to all new hires. This ensures that the requirement is fulfilled in a timely manner. If the training is completed as part of the supervisor’s new hire acculturation onboarding, this also makes it easier for HR to document that it took place in accordance with the law. Having this training completed up front also reduces the likelihood that a new supervisor will make a decision in the interim that would place the employer at risk for litigation. Fortunately, quite a few states accept online training as sufficient as long as it is interactive. That just means the trainee must have some way to ask questions and receive timely answers. The use of an acculturation onboarding portal that is compatible with third party vendors who specialize in anti-harassment training makes this process easier to administer. |
