ICE and e-Verify
By Chuck Ros of Emerald Software Group, LLC
When it comes to onboarding best practices, limiting your exposure to fines and penalties is a central goal. In November of 2009, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that they have issued 1,000 new I9 audit notices. This is the second wave of inspections in what is likely to be a long campaign to increase compliance levels among U.S. employers. In this type of audit, you can be fined $110-1,100 for every I9 you fail to produce. If you haven’t been keeping up with the latest rules for employment verification, you could face an even steeper penalty. Employers who have pervasive problems with I9s that are incorrectly completed or processed can be hit with fines that reach tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. ICE has a number of best practices they recommend that could help keep you out of trouble during an inspection. This includes performing your own annual audits and providing yearly training for your I9 administrator. Using E-Verify is another important step. This is simplest when you have onboarding software that is interfaced with the UCSIS system. That way, your I9s are automatically routed to E-verify after they have been correctly filled out and the relevant documents have been inspected. |
