New Employee Onboarding - Hearts & Minds

New employee onboarding is about more than just making sure individuals have the tools and training to do their jobs. Acculturation also involves getting your new hires "hooked" on your corporate culture. They need to feel like part of the family. This means you should spend some time reviewing the social side of your onboarding portal. Here are some questions to ask: Do you have a well defined corporate culture? For example, you might be placing deliberate emphasis on coworker mentoring, work/life balance, community involvement, or other positive aspects of your company’s values. Do new employees have an easy way to connect with each other using your company’s communication platform? For example, do you have an internal social network where they can upload a personal profile and find coworkers with similar backgrounds and interests? Are new employees being encouraged to participate in special interest groups or clubs as part of their onboarding process? You can make these activities more attractive by including lots of photos and coworker testimonials about past events on your intranet site. Are you tracking participation to see where this aspect of new employee onboarding can be improved? For example, you should know what percentage of your new hires have actually filled out their company profile. You should also make full use of surveys to get the employee's perspective on how integrated they feel.
