Onboarding New Employees: The Path to Productivity
By Chuck Ros
With any new-hire, there is an initial time period when the individual is less than fully productive. This isn’t the worker’s fault - everyone has some learning to do in a new job. However, when you are onboarding new employees, you do have some control over how long it takes to get them up and running. The way you start things off on the very first day can make a big difference. Here are 3 ways to speed your employees on the path to productivity: 1. Having new hires fill out all their forms in an online environment is ideal. An onboarding system can make this step-by-step process fly by since the document fields are linked from one screen to the next. For example, when an employee fills out his/her name or other identifying information on one form it is automatically filled in on all the subsequent forms. You can also import relevant data from your recruiting program to make this process even faster. 2. Do all your provisioning in advance. With a good requisitioning program, you can make sure your employees have what they need to start work immediately. This covers everything from computer access to a time card, equipment, tools, uniforms, you name it! 3. Include some multi-media in your socialization/acculturation onboarding module. A welcome video from your CEO (or messages from coworkers) encourage an instant feeling of connection between your new hires and your company. When your employees feel "at home" instead of nervous, they can concentrate more effectively on their training and orientation. |
