Onboarding Programs and Orientation

By Chuck Ros of Emerald Software Group

Successful acculturation onboarding programs are all about variety and flexibility. Your new hires shouldn’t simply be inundated with data. They should be able to ask questions and fully explore the information that’s being presented to them. It’s important to remember that not everyone learns in the same way. Your new employee orientation and training modules should focus on ensuring your employees have a learning environment that promotes quick knowledge acquisition and long term recall.

There are a number of ways to achieve this. With a comprehensive employee onboarding system, you can upload video and audio lessons that provide a valuable learning resource for people who don’t absorb information well from written content. You can also include links that encourage employees to branch out and learn more about specific topics.

If you have an existing employee portal, you may be able to integrate it with your onboarding software so that new hires are transitioned seamlessly from one platform to the other (but you might also need a way of having new employes access the portal even before their first day). With a truly agile solution, you can also connect with third party training partners who provide access to interactive and virtual classrooms.

Whatever approach you use, always remember to incorporate metrics to evaluate the success of your acculturation program. This way, you can determine how to continuously improve it as you aid each employee in achieving maximum productivity in the shortest possible time frame.

I think that the important thing for hiring companies to keep in mind is that... they are hiring... people. People are individuals.
